Working artists, murals, and galleries along the Old Town art walk.

Studio Channel Islands is an art center at 2222 Ventura Boulevard in Old Town Camarillo. About 40 local artists keep studios there in converted classrooms. On the first Saturday of each month, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the studios open to the public.

During Open Studios you can walk in, watch artists at work and talk with them about their pieces, classes or commissions. It's a relaxed visit for anyone curious about how art gets made, and Old Town's restaurants are a short walk away.

What to expect

• Up to around 40 artists working in their studios
• Work in drawing, painting, ceramics, encaustic, woodcut, pastel, weaving, sculpture, etching and jewelry
• The chance to ask artists about classes and commissions
• The center's gallery, open Tuesday–Saturday outside Open Studios

Tips for going

• Come between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month. Outside Open Studios, the studios are open by appointment only.
• Parking on site is free.
• The Camarillo farmers market runs next door on Saturday mornings, so you can combine the two.
• Ask before taking photos of an artist's work.

Is it free?

Yes. Admission and parking are both free.

Can I visit on other days?

The gallery is open Tuesday–Friday 11 a.m.–5 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Individual studios are open by appointment outside Open Studios.

Do they offer classes?

Yes. The center runs after-school classes for kids, a summer art camp and adult classes.

About Camarillo

Camarillo sits on the Oxnard Plain between the Conejo Grade and the strawberry fields: an outlet mall on the 101, a walkable Old Town on Ventura Boulevard, the 1892 Camarillo Ranch House, and an airport that was once Oxnard Air Force Base. It's also where this project started.

Getting there: Metrolink and Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner stop at the Camarillo station on Lewis Road, at the east end of Old Town. Old Town's shops and restaurants line Ventura Boulevard between Lewis Road and Carmen Drive.
