Rome's marathon winds through the historic centre. The 2026 race had a record 36,000 entries, three-quarters of them from abroad.

Rome's marathon was first held in 1982, and the current series has run since 1995. It goes through Rome's historic centre, past sites such as the Colosseum and the Circus Maximus. The 2027 race on Sunday 14 March is the 32nd edition.

The race has grown fast, from 8,000 runners in 2021 to a sold-out field of 36,000 in 2026. That year 75% of participants came from abroad, from 166 countries. The race weekend also includes a Fun Run and relay races, so it isn't only for marathoners.

About Rome

Rome's ancient core runs from the Colosseum past the Forum to the white Vittoriano on Piazza Venezia, a few thousand years of history in a 20-minute walk.

Getting there: Metro line B stops at Colosseo, opposite the amphitheatre, and line C's new Colosseo–Fori Imperiali station opened beside it in December 2025. Piazza Venezia and the Vittoriano are a straight walk up Via dei Fori Imperiali.
